- Here's my $.02 on "Software Hut = Scam Hut".
-
- About 1 year ago I was looking to upgrade my A500 VXL-030/25 system
- with some 32bit fast ram. Not being able to find the VXL daughter
- board anywhere due to the maker going out of business I started looking
- for a replacement processor that would accept 32bit memory easily.
-
- "Scam Hut" at that time advertised the M-Tec _16 Mhz_ 020 accelerator in
- their ad's. I purchased one, plugged it in my machine, and found out
- that they had engaged in a bit of false advertising. (I still have
- the magazine to prove it...) The M-Tec runs at 14 Mhz, just simple,
- and cheaper, clock doubling. Not a much more valuable, and upgradable
- crystal/clock driven microprocessor.
-
- Being somewhat disappointed to find that my new toy was of a somewhat
- inferior quality, I called "Scam Hut" to ask them if there were
- different models of the M-Tec 020. IE one that ran at 14Mhz, and one
- that was a 16Mhz model. After many dollars worth of calls to their
- tech support number, trying to get an answer, one of their brilliant
- techies told me to send the unit back.
-
- "Yes!" I thought, they do have a 16Mhz version! So I packaged it up,
- an mailed it back to them. After several more weeks of run around
- once they had both the accelerator, and my money, they finally told me
- that the M-Tec hardware did indeed only run at 14 Mhz, just that one of
- their software benchmarking programs reported the accelerator was as
- fast as a 16 Mhz processor. To make up for the trouble, expense,
- and lost time from them keeping my accelerator for weeks while doing
- _nothing_ their customer service department stated they would ship
- it back to me by 2nd day air, free of charge. I thought, "OK, fine
- anything is better than a 68000." I received it on time, no problems.
-
- Until I happened to look at my Visa bill the next month. Right there,
- bold as day was a charge from "Scam Hut" for the 2nd day air shipment
- back to me that they said would be free! At this point I was so disgusted
- with trying to work with them I chalked it up to experience, and crossed
- them off my list of companys I do business with. Forever!
-
- This is just my personal little experience, draw from it what you want.
- Threats of legal action will be directed to >NIL:. I have all the
- documentation, including the magazine ad to back up everything I have
- said.
-
- Take Care,
- Ken
